The city sits in the foothills of the Eastern Cordillera on the Guatiquía river, a little over 100 km from Bogotá along the Autopista al Llano — two to three hours by road depending on traffic — and is the main commercial centre of Colombia’s eastern plains. Every year it hosts the International Joropo Tournament, with Parque Las Malocas as one of its main venues, and the Universidad de los Llanos, created in 1974, was the first university in the city and the region.
