This Tarija chat is for people from the southern Bolivian city founded on 4 July 1574 by Luis de Fuentes y Vargas, 1,834 metres up in the central valley crossed by the Guadalquivir river. The room is #tarija.
#tarija has just been created and is empty. Joining from this page also opens #bolivia, the national room, which has people but no crowds, and #latinoamerica, the busiest room for the region.
Tarija’s mild climate made it wine country from the 17th century, and its wineries still produce high-altitude wines and singani. The year revolves around the Fiesta Grande de San Roque, the Entrada de Comadres and the Carnaval Chapaco, and the city is home to the Casa Dorada, the Castillo Azul and the national palaeontology museum. Its history ties it to northern Argentina: in colonial times it answered to the intendancy of Salta, and in April 1817 local gaucho fighters helped defeat royalist troops at La Tablada. Bolivia stays on UTC−4 all year. See also Potosí, Salta and Bolivia.
