About Radio Luna Llena Chat

It's 3:15 am when Diego, from an apartment in Lavapiés with the blinds down, writes his first message in the room. He can't sleep. Again. The 11 pm coffee no longer works, and insomnia has led him to seek something more than silence on his phone. Someone responds instantly: "Ballad or whisper?". Diego chooses ballad. Minutes later, an anonymous voice recommends *The Night We Met* by Lord Huron, and the conversation drifts towards those loves that fade like the smoke of a poorly extinguished cigarette. He doesn't know if he'll return, but that night, for the first time in weeks, he doesn't feel alone.

Conversations here aren't about music in the abstract. Someone asks if *Por debajo de la mesa* by Luis Miguel sounds just as sad in acoustic version, and in seconds there are three responses with YouTube links and a discussion about whether the 90s arrangements ruined the original ballads. On Fridays, inevitably, someone brings up the topic of songs that "can't be listened to after a breakup", and the list grows like a wall of post-its: *Someone Like You* by Adele, *Fix You* by Coldplay, *Te lo pido por favor* by Juan Gabriel. There's also room for the absurd: a user swears that *Bésame mucho* saved him from a robbery in Mexico DF, and another confesses that he cried listening to *Bohemian Rhapsody* in a gas station bathroom at 4 am. The tone oscillates between irony and tenderness, as if everyone knew that, at these hours, even bad jokes deserve a smile.

What makes this room unique is that unwritten ritual of the "3 am" hour. It doesn't matter if it's Tuesday or Sunday: at that hour, there's always someone connected, as if everyone had synchronized their clocks with the same insomnia. Veterans recognize newcomers because they ask about *Radio Futura* or *Soda Stereo* instead of *Cigarettes After Sex*, and there's a friendly rivalry between those who prefer ballads in Spanish and those who defend "romanticism in English" (read: The Weeknd and Lana Del Rey). There's also the room bot, which every midnight sends an automatic message: "If you're awake, you're not alone", followed by a moon emoji. Nobody knows who programmed it, but everyone appreciates it.

To join, all you need is a nickname and an IRC client (mIRC, HexChat, or even ChatZona's webchat). There's no registration, no written rules beyond common sense, and the server has been up since 2007 without a single day of downtime. You can connect from your mobile while waiting for the metro or from your PC with the volume down to not wake anyone up. All you need is the desire to talk — or listen — when the rest of the world sleeps. And if you stay silent for the first few minutes, don't worry: even ghosts respond here.
