Pepino Chat

It’s 22:45 on a rainy Tuesday and Carlos, a 28‑year‑old barista from Granada, is scrolling through ChatZona on his phone. He’s looking for a place to talk about the local football club and the latest gossip from his hometown. He remembers the first time he typed “¿Quién ganó la Copa del Rey?” into the channel and how the replies came in faster than his espresso shots. Now, after a week of missed days, he’s back, hoping someone will remember the old chant he still hums.

In Pepino the chat jumps from a debate over whether La Liga will stay ahead of the Champions League, to a heated discussion about the best tapas spots in Sevilla, to a thread where someone shares a recipe for paella that has been in their family for generations. There’s also a weekly “¿Qué canción suena en tu radio?” thread that turns into a nostalgic trip down memory lane, with users swapping childhood playlists. The humor is dry, the arguments passionate but never vicious, and everyone keeps an ear open for the next story or meme that pops up.

What sets Pepino apart is the mix of regional dialects that swirl together like a perfect sauce. A Madrid native will drop “tío” in a sentence that a Valencian will reply with “olé”, and a Castilian will joke about the “guerra de los churros” while a Catalan user brings up the latest Catalan elections. The room has a quirky tradition: every Sunday at 18:00, the channel lights up with a countdown to the “Café de la tarde” meme, and the first person to type the exact phrase gets a virtual high‑five. Only regulars know the secret password that unlocks a hidden “chiste de la semana” channel that appears once a month.

You don’t need an account to hop in. Pick a nickname, connect via the IRC client or the web interface, and you’re in. ChatZona has been running on real IRC since 2007, and Pepino is one of its most enduring rooms. If you’re from Spain or just love the sound of a friendly debate, drop in. It would be unusual if nobody replied within the first two minutes.
