Palencia Chat

On a rainy Thursday afternoon, José, a 28‑year‑old from Palencia, types “¡hola, gente!” from his cramped apartment while sipping a cheap café con leche. He remembers the first time he stumbled into this chat two years ago, chasing a rumor about the local football club’s new coach. The instant he saw the familiar “palencia” tag, he clicked in, found a handful of voices, and never left. Now he returns every night at 20:00, just to hear the same friendly banter and the occasional burst of heated debate about the latest transfer.

Inside, the conversation jumps from the latest La Liga scores to whether the Spanish government should raise taxes on alcohol. Someone challenges the others about the best way to make tortilla de patatas, while a regular asks for advice on fixing a broken motorbike. The room is a mix of dry humor, nostalgia for the days of dial‑up, and earnest support for a friend going through a breakup. Even the debates over who would win in a match between Barcelona and Real Madrid are punctuated by memes that only the locals will understand.

What sets this room apart is the blend of accents that echo the entire north‑west of Spain, the inside jokes about the town’s annual “Fiesta del Vino” that have been running since 2007, and the unwritten rule that every Friday night at 21:00 a “tapas” thread starts automatically. The regulars keep a running tally of how many times the word “moro” has been used, and they all know that a sudden surge of Spanish slang is always a sign that the room is about to go wild.

Joining is as simple as opening the ChatZona client, picking a nickname, and typing “/join #palencia.” No registration, no ads, just real IRC from 2007. If you’re from Spain, you’ll feel right at home. It would be unusual if nobody replied within the first two minutes.
