Otakus Chat

It was 2 a.m. On a rainy Thursday when Mateo, a 19‑year‑old from Quito, fired up his laptop and typed “#ChatOtakus” into the IRC client. He’d seen a friend’s screenshot of a K‑pop debate and, after a long night of listening to BTS “Dynamite,” felt the pull to join. The first message was a simple “Hola, ¿K‑pop?” followed by a flurry of emojis, and the room erupted with a chorus of greetings. Mateo stayed, watching the chat scroll, and when the next topic popped up—whether “Stray Kids” or “TXT” deserved the title of the hottest group—he couldn’t resist chiming in.

Every night the room turns into a mix‑and‑match of fandom gossip and meme‑filled banter. One thread has the group split over “Red Velvet vs. Blackpink” while another dives into the best unreleased BTS tracks. A meme about a mispronounced “Ddu-Du Ddu-Du” gets shared, then a heated argument about the best choreography takes over. When someone drops a link to a live concert, the chatter shifts to nostalgic stories of the first time they heard the group sing. The humor is dry, the arguments respectful, and the support for new releases is palpable.

No other room has the same blend of Spanish‑speaking and Korean‑language tags that pop up in the same sentence, nor the inside joke about the “Mina meme” that only appears on Fridays. Regulars have a tradition: every Sunday night at 10 p.m., they post a “K‑pop bingo” card, and whoever fills a row first gets a shout‑out. The unofficial “night owl” hours start at 1 a.m., when the chat shifts to late‑night reviews of the latest EP releases. These quirks, born in 2009, keep the room alive and distinct.

No registration is needed—just a nickname and an IRC client. Whether on a phone or a desktop, you can hop into #ChatOtakus whenever the music starts. ChatZona has been running on real IRC since 2007, so the connection is always instant. Once you send your first message, someone will almost certainly reply within two minutes. It’s that simple.
