Novés Chat

It was 9 pm on a rainy Tuesday when Marta, a 28‑year‑old graphic designer from Zaragoza, typed her first message into the Novés channel. She’d been scrolling through the channel list on her phone, looking for a place where the locals from her town could still chat about the local football match after the national news cycle had moved on. The first thing she saw was a thread titled “¿Qué tal el último partido del Real Zaragoza?” and a handful of replies that started with, “El equipo se quedó sin el mediocampista, ¿qué opináis?” Marta hit “Enter,” joined the conversation, and never left.

In Novés you’ll find debates that start with a single question and spiral into a full-blown discussion. Someone will ask whether the new mayor’s plan to expand the town’s public transport is realistic, while another user will counter with a personal anecdote about the bus that never arrives on time. A regular will post a link to a YouTube video of a local festival, and the room will erupt into a nostalgic trip down memory lane, recalling the first time they saw the fireworks in the plaza. Occasionally, a heated argument will break out over the best tapas bar in the city, but it always ends with a meme about “la paella de la abuela” that brings everyone back to a lighter tone.

What makes Novés stand out is the blend of accents that swirl through the chat: a sharp Castilian, a soft Andalusian, a quick Catalan, and even a few Basque words dropped in for good measure. The room has its own inside joke—every Friday at 10 pm a user posts a random fact about the city, and the rest of the group must guess whether it’s true or a fabrication. The unofficial “midnight coffee” hour is when the room really buzzes; people swap recipes, discuss the latest local news, and share photos of their street art. The tradition of shouting “¡Vamos, Novés!” after every goal in a football match is something you only see here.

No registration is required. Just pick a nickname, open ChatZona on your mobile or desktop, and type #noves in the channel list. ChatZona has been running real IRC since 2007, so you’ll feel right at home. It would be unusual if nobody replied within the first two minutes—just another reminder that the room is always alive and waiting for you.
