Novelda Chat

On a rainy Saturday afternoon, Miguel, a 32‑year‑old barista from Granada, opens the chat on his phone while waiting for the tram. He remembers the first time he typed “¡hola!” into a room named after his hometown, Novelda, and a wave of laughter and a flurry of replies followed. The novelty of seeing his own name in a string of capital letters, surrounded by other locals, made him stay. Now, after three years of commuting, he logs in every Sunday at 5 p.m. To catch the local news and the latest football gossip before the bar closes.

The room buzzes with a mix of topics that never feels forced. One thread debates whether Mbappé or Vinicius can win the next Copa del Rey, while another dives into the merits of the new Spanish tax law. A regular, Ana, shares a recipe for tortilla de patatas that everyone tries to replicate, and a newbie asks for advice on finding a job in Madrid after finishing his degree. Arguments flare over the best tapas spot in Salamanca, but they usually end with a collective “¡que sea!” and a shared meme of a cat wearing a flamenco hat.

No other room captures the peculiar blend of accents: a Catalan with a Spanish twist, a Castilian who speaks like a Sevillan, and a Navarrese who drops the “r” at the end of words. They have a ritual of sending a “¡Salud!” emoji at 7:30 p.m. Every Friday night, marking the unofficial start of the match day hype. The unofficial “hora del café” at 3 a.m. Sees old timers reminiscing about the early days of IRC, trading stories about the first “ping” that still echoes in the chat. Only those who’ve been here since the late nineties know the hidden “meme‑channel” where the word “polvo” turns into a secret code for “cheers.”

There’s no registration required—just pick a nickname that fits you and hop on any device. ChatZona has been running on real IRC since 2007, so you can connect via the web or a lightweight client. The moment you type your first message, you’ll find someone ready to reply, because in Novelda it would be unusual for nobody to respond within the first two minutes.
