Niharra Chat

It’s 10 p.m. On a rainy Tuesday when Luis from Seville types “¿Niharra?” into the console, fingers trembling because he just finished a night shift at the bank. The first time he hopped in, he was looking for a place to vent about the new tax law. He came back because every evening, someone in the room drops a meme that’s as Spanish as a churro and as sharp as a legal clause.

Once the clock strikes 10, the conversation splinters into three lanes. One lane debates whether a new Spanish TV series will beat an English one, with a flurry of emojis and a sudden shift to the merits of “La Casa de Papel” versus “Money Heist.” Another lane is a support group for people who lost jobs in the tourism sector, exchanging tips on how to pivot to digital marketing. A third lane, usually quiet, bursts into a heated argument about the best tapas in Madrid, complete with a photo of a plate of tortilla de patata that earns a chorus of “¡Sí, sí!” from the room.

What makes Niharra stand out is the rhythm of the banter. Every Friday night, after midnight, a ritual begins: someone posts a photo of their last week’s coffee, and the room reacts with a chorus of “¡Café! ¡Café! ¡Café!” The language is a mash‑up of Andalusian, Catalan, and a sprinkle of English slang that only the regulars can understand. There’s a secret code word that, when spoken, triggers an automatic meme thread about the latest football scandal. The room never closes; it simply shifts from polite to sarcastic, from nostalgia for old Madrid cafés to a passionate defense of a local football club.
