About Chat Mediterráneo

On Sunday afternoons, Paco from Alicante logs in with the same old nickname—*ElPirata62*—and kicks things off with a "Hey, landlubbers!" before dropping the day’s first topic: does anyone remember that live version of *Mediterráneo* Serrat did in ’75 at the Liceu? It’s not a rhetorical question. Within three minutes, three people hit him with YouTube links, a fourth corrects the year ("It was ’74, man—I’ve got the vinyl"), and a fifth chimes in with, "Paco, again with this?" He laughs, types, "Damn, I never get tired of it," and fires off a new one: has anyone heard Kiko Veneno’s latest album, the one he recorded on a boat? The room smells like fresh coffee and sea salt, even though no one’s near the water. Paco first stumbled in here in 2010, looking for music recommendations for a beach party, and he hasn’t missed a Sunday since. "No one judges you for blasting Camarón at 3 AM," he always says.

Conversations revolve around what’s playing on the speakers of a Málaga bar, whether *La Flaca* by Jarabe de Palo is better in the original or the Wyclef Jean remix, or why the hell kids these days don’t listen to Catalan rumba. Debates ebb and flow like the tide: is *Aute poetry with a guitar* or *pretentious drivel*? Did Rosalía steal the soul of rumba or save it? Does anyone have the number for that guy who sold rare vinyl at El Rastro? The tone is direct, sometimes sharp, but never mean. If someone asks about an ’80s song they can’t remember, five people reply with the exact title and the minute the guitar solo kicks in. If someone says, "I hate purists," someone else fires back, "And I hate people who play reggaeton on a Formentera beach." Help comes disguised as banter: "Dude, if you don’t know what *dirty rumba* sounds like, stay out of this."

What makes this room special is that trends don’t exist here—just tastes with history. The dominant vibe is for those who grew up with bootleg cassettes and scratched records, and the inside jokes revolve around two things: *Serrat fans* vs. *Camarón fans* (a rivalry that never gets serious) and the *Club of People Who Hate Mecano* (though everyone secretly knows *Hijo de la luna* is a banger). On Thursday nights, out of nowhere, someone asks, "What were you listening to the first time you hooked up?" and the room floods with confessions set to music. There’s an unspoken rule: if someone mentions *Peret*, someone else has to shout, "The king of rumba!" And if anyone brings up *Radio Futura*, three people will reply with "Escuela de calor" before they finish typing. The unofficial peak hours are between 10 PM and 1 AM, when the early risers have finished dinner and the night owls haven’t gone to bed yet. No algorithms here—just people who know *La chica de ayer* isn’t just a song.
