About Las Locas del IRC

Every Thursday at 11 PM, *LaViejaDelVisillo* drops the same bad joke about her straight neighbor, and the whole room cracks up. She’s been logged in since 2012 from a cybercafé in Lavapiés, using a nick stolen from a ‘90s show and an IRC client that looks like it belongs in a museum. She first joined because someone in another room told her, "Here, no one’s gonna ask if you’re trans, queer, or an alien—they’ll just ask if you prefer *RuPaul* or *Drag Race España*." She came back the next day. And the day after. Now she’s the one who warns newbies about the Ctrl+K color bind, even though everyone knows no one gets it right on the first try.

Here, you can talk about anything—just make it stylish. One day, someone asks if it’s normal for their girlfriend to ask them not to talk about *One Piece* in bed ("Unanimous answer: *no, but buy her a Luffy Funko and pretend you don’t know what it’s about*"). The next, a heated debate erupts over whether Lordi really won Eurovision 2006 or if it was actually a Swedish conspiracy. Some come to drop a three-line *coming out* and leave with a "thanks" and twenty *Dora the Explorer* memes in *bear* mode. Jobs in Berlin get shared, Grindr flirting tips are swapped (without dying in the process), and on Sundays, there’s a fixed thread about *shows no one else has seen* (this month it’s *The L Word: Generation Q*, and the divide is real: "It’s a necessary reboot" vs. "It’s an insult to Jenny Schecter’s memory").

What you won’t find anywhere else is *sarcasm with heart*. Insults fly harder than in a locker room, but if something’s really wrong, twenty people show up with resources, contacts, or just their own story to share. There are absurd traditions: *drag queen*-themed nicks on Fridays, a bot that spits out Almodóvar quotes when someone says "madre," and the eternal feud between those who swear *Vis a Vis* is better than *Orange Is the New Black* and those who’d rather burn the IRC down than admit it. Then there’s *ghost hour*: 3 to 5 AM, when only the insomniacs, the post-party crowd, and the people pretending they don’t have work tomorrow remain. Those nights, the room smells like cold coffee and confessions you wouldn’t make in daylight.

To join, all you need is an IRC client (mIRC, HexChat, or even ChatZona’s webchat), a nickname that doesn’t need explaining, and the willingness to get a *Who the hell are you?* in your first thirty seconds. No registration, no written rules—just "don’t be an asshole" and "if you mention *Javier Cansado* out of nowhere, we’re banning you." It works the same on mobile as it does on a 2007 PC, because IRC doesn’t do trends. The weird part would be if no one replied within two minutes.
