It's nine at night and Mikel, from a flat in Gros with views of the Kursaal, writes his first message in years: "Gaur ez dut ezer ulertzen, norbait gogoratzen al du '98ko udako kontzertua Donostian?". In less than a minute, three responses overlap: a blurry photo of that stage in Anoeta, a "Hau, Mikel! Zer moduz?" from someone he hadn't seen since high school, and a "Bai, baina zergatik ari zara oraindik pijama?" that makes him laugh alone in front of the screen. Mikel wasn't looking for nostalgia, but a place where he didn't have to translate himself. Here, no one asks him to explain why Basque sounds more natural to him than Spanish when talking about football or the rain in La Concha.

Topics bounce around like pelota: someone asks if anyone has tried the new txalupa pintxo in the Old Town, and in five messages, there's already a bet on which bar makes it best. Sundays in the afternoon, the room fills with debates about Athletic —"¿Por qué no fichamos a un delantero vasco de verdad?"— that end in memes of Iñaki Williams running like a demon. There's also space for serious topics: job offers in Bilbao, advice on passing the EGA, or that recurring thread where someone asks "¿Alguien más se siente raro hablando euskera fuera de Euskal Herria?". The tone is direct, sometimes sharp, but never cruel. If someone says "Zer da hau, jendea?" because the chat has gone off-topic, everyone understands it's time to get back on track.

What no other room has is that unwritten code of nicknames: if your name is Aitor89, someone will rebaptize you as Aitor89_ezkerralde or Aitor89_kafea in two days. There's a healthy rivalry between those who connect from Iparralde and those from the CAV, and a tradition on Thursday nights: "Zer egin duzu astean?", where each person tells their week in three lines. Veterans remember when the room was called EuskalChat and you had to explain what a nick was, but now newcomers arrive by recommendation from a cousin or coworker. The only thing that doesn't change is that if you mention Goenkale, someone will say "Hau, oraindik gogoratzen dut!" even though the series ended a decade ago.

Joining is as simple as putting a nickname and typing /join #Kaixo in any IRC client —mIRC, HexChat, or even from your phone with AndroIRC—. There's no registration, no written rules, just the tacit agreement that here you speak in Basque or keep quiet. If you make a mistake and write in Spanish, someone will correct you with a "Euskaraz, mesedez", but without acidity. The strange thing would be if no one responded to you in the first two minutes.
