IBEX 35 Chat

It’s late and someone just asked the question everyone was thinking: “How can a small startup beat the giants in the IBEX 35?” Miguel, a 28‑year‑old fintech coder from Valencia, types the line while sipping espresso in his apartment. He first stumbled into the room during a Spanish economic crash livestream, looking for a quick answer to a sudden tax change. The moment he hit “Enter,” a flurry of replies, memes, and a sudden surge of “¡Claro!” made him stay, and now he returns every Friday night to trade ideas and memes about the market.

Every night the chat flips between serious market analysis and absurd memes. One thread debates whether the IBEX 35’s tech sector will overtake the traditional banking bloc, while another sees someone asking for a quick guide on launching a fintech in Madrid. A few minutes later a veteran trader jokes about the last time the Spanish bull market turned into a bear, and a newbie shares a screenshot of her first investment, prompting a cascade of “¡Felicidades!” emojis. The tone oscillates: dry humour on one side, heated arguments over fiscal policy on the other, but always with a supportive undercurrent that keeps newcomers engaged.

What sets this room apart is the accidental cross‑border cocktail of accents and insider lingo. A Spanish speaker from Barcelona will drop a phrase in Catalan, a Madrid native will throw in a Madridese slang, and a Lisbon trader will interject a Portuguese joke about “bovinos” that only a few will understand. There’s an unwritten rule: every Thursday at 21:00, the room lights up with a countdown to the next “Bulls vs. Bears” poll, and the last 30 minutes are reserved for a live “stock‑ticker” meme contest. Regulars remember the “Gipuzkoan espresso” meme from 2012, and anyone who forgets to say “¡Pura vida!” at the start of a thread gets a playful reprimand.

Just hop onto IRC, pick a nickname, and type /join #ChatIBEX35. No registration required—just your phone or laptop. ChatZona has been running real IRC since 2007, so the connection feels instant. Once you’re in, you’ll notice that a reply usually appears within the first two minutes, so it would be unusual if nobody jumped into the conversation right away.
