Gómez de Alvarado first founded the city on 15 August 1539 at Huánuco Pampa, now called Huánuco Viejo; it was later re-founded in the Huallaga valley as León de Huánuco. About five kilometres away is Kotosh and its Temple of the Crossed Hands, dating from around 1800 BC. Football talk here means the Clásico Huanuqueño between León de Huánuco and Alianza Huánuco at the Heraclio Tapia stadium, opened in 1952, and the Carretera Central links the city with Lima, Cerro de Pasco and Pucallpa.
