Hispanics in the USA Chat

“Hispanic” is one of the two census words — “Hispanic or Latino” — and this chat takes it as it is: a room for people living in the United States who want to talk in Spanish, wherever their family comes from. The Census Bureau counted 68,086,153 Hispanics in 2024, close to 20% of the country. The room is #hispanos_usa.

It is new and nobody has written in it yet, so joining also opens #usa, the busiest US room, and #latinos, which also has people.

In a 2012 Pew survey, half (51%) said they mostly describe themselves by their family’s country of origin, and those with a preference chose “Hispanic” over “Latino” by more than two to one (33% to 14%). California had 15.6 million in 2020, Texas 11.4 million and Florida 5.7 million, where Puerto Ricans outnumber Mexicans; New Mexico has the highest share, 47.7%. With around 41 million native speakers, the US has the second-largest Spanish-speaking population in the world after Mexico, yet the language fades from one generation to the next, and a Spanish-speaking room helps keep it.
