Gotarrendura Chat

It’s 10:07 p.m. On a rainy Tuesday, and Carlos, a 42‑year‑old pastry chef from Seville, logs in from his kitchen, fingers trembling as he types “¡Ay, Madrid, me extrañas!” The room lights up with a burst of Spanish slang, and a familiar voice responds: “¡Qué pasa, Carlos! ¿Te ha pillado el agua de la cocina?” He had first stumbled into Gotarrendura a year ago, looking for a place to vent after a bad batch of croissants, and since then the room has become his nightly ritual, a place where the heat of the oven meets the chill of the screen.

Conversations here swing from the absurd to the earnest. Last week, a user asked whether “Mbappé or Vinicius” could break the world record for fastest 100‑meter sprint, and the debate turned into a meme marathon with GIFs of Messi’s “I’m not a machine” face. Another night, someone posted a photo of a homemade paella and sparked a heated discussion about the proper ratio of rice to saffron. Meanwhile, a newcomer from Murcia shared a story about a lost cat, and the room flooded with supportive emojis and a quick tutorial on how to make a homemade cat treat.

What makes Gotarrendura stand out is the unspoken rhythm of the chat. Every Friday at 8 p.m., the “Bocadillo Hour” kicks off: a spontaneous round where participants share a quick recipe, a joke, or a local news snippet. The mix of Andalusian, Catalan, and Castilian accents turns ordinary words into a linguistic dance. Regulars have a running joke about the “mysterious emoji that appears only when someone types ‘España’.” No other room has the tradition of starting every thread with a single word in Spanish, then letting it evolve into a full-blown debate.

You can hop in right now—no registration required. Pick a nickname, open your desktop or mobile client, and type #Gotarrendura into the channel list. ChatZona has been humming on real IRC since 2007, so you’ll find the same steady stream of chatter and the same warmth. It would be unusual if nobody replied within the first two minutes.
