El Guijo Chat

It’s 8:32 p.m. On a rainy Saturday when Javier, a 32‑year‑old Madrid software developer, types in “#ElGuijo” from his apartment’s living room. He’s looking for a quick laugh after a long day debugging code. The first time he joined, a friend had sent him the link while he was stuck on a stack overflow thread. He stayed because the chat never feels like a lecture; it’s a handful of friends throwing ideas and memes into one pot.

Here the topics jump from the absurd to the practical. One thread is a heated debate: “Is Mbappé still the best forward or has Vinicius taken the crown?” Another sees a user asking for advice on how to land a remote job in Berlin while juggling Spanish taxes. A third thread is a nostalgic walk down memory lane, with people swapping photos of the old bus stop near El Guijo’s square. The tone swings from dry humour—jokes about the local football club’s last season—to genuine support when someone shares a personal loss.

No other room mixes accents like this one does. The regulars speak in a patchwork of Castilian, Catalan, and a sprinkle of Basque, and only they understand the “guijero” slang that pops up every hour. There’s an unofficial rule: if you say “¡Qué guapo!” in the morning, you’ll get a ping back with a meme about the town’s annual festival. The room lights up at 11 p.m. With a midnight “café con churros” chat, where everyone shares recipes and the latest gossip from their neighbourhoods.

Just type the nickname you like, hit enter, and you’re in. No sign‑ups, no fees, no fuss. ChatZona has been running on real IRC since 2007, so you can hop on from a phone or desktop. Once you join, you’ll notice it’s almost inevitable that someone will reply within two minutes—because the room is always buzzing, ready to welcome another voice into the mix.
