Dolores Chat

It’s 9 pm on a rainy Tuesday when Miguel, a 32‑year‑old barista from Zaragoza, logs in from his cramped apartment and types his first message into Dolores: “¿Algún consejo sobre el trabajo de fin de máster en sociología?” He remembers the first time he saw the room name in a forum thread about Spanish municipalities, and how the lively debate convinced him to come back. He’s now back every Friday night, hoping to find a fellow student or an old friend who remembers the 1998 elections.

Here, the conversations jump from local gossip to global pop culture. One thread debates whether Mbappé or Vinicius will win the next World Cup, while another dives into the nuances of municipal budgets in Andalucía. A user from Madrid asks for tips on setting up a community garden, and someone from Valencia replies with a link to a Spanish government portal. The tone swings from dry humor—“El ayuntamiento es tan lento que la abuela ya terminó su novela”—to heated arguments about regional autonomy, then back to supportive chatter about weekend tapas.

The room’s uniqueness lies in its blend of accents and inside jokes. Every Monday at 8 pm, a regular named “El Padrino” drops a meme about the “paseo del Río” that only locals recognize. There’s an unwritten rule: the first person to mention “el 42” gets a virtual high‑five from everyone. The unofficial hours of 11 pm to 2 am are when the chat erupts with spontaneous karaoke challenges and impromptu debates on the best paella recipe. Those quirks have kept the room alive for years, even as new members drift in.

Joining is effortless—no registration, just pick a nickname and hop on the IRC client. ChatZona has been running on real IRC since 2007, so the connection is instant whether you’re on mobile or desktop. Log in, type /join #Dolores, and you’ll find yourself in the midst of a conversation that might turn into a late‑night banter or a useful tip for your next municipal project. It would be unusual if nobody replied within the first two minutes.
