Coria Chat

On a rainy Thursday evening, José, a 38‑year‑old barista from Seville, logs in from his kitchen table with a steaming mug of café con leche. He remembers his first night here after a night out with friends, when a friend whispered, “Just drop in, the guys in the Spanish room will welcome you.” The chat lightens his day, and he returns because the same familiar faces greet him with a quick “¡Hola, José!” even before he types.

In Coria the topics swing from the absurd to the earnest. One minute someone is debating whether Mbappé or Vinicius is the best forward for the national team; the next, a user asks for tips on how to keep a Spanish-speaking job while living in Berlin. A heated argument erupts over the political fallout of the 2023 elections, but it is quickly tempered by a meme about the “presidential selfie” that everyone shares. Old timers reminisce about the days when the internet was just dial‑up, while newcomers brag about their new smartphones. It’s a mix of dry humor, passionate politics, and supportive advice, all wrapped in a casual, almost bar‑room feel.

What makes this room stand out is the accidental language mash‑up. A few locals from Extremadura will drop a phrase in Castilian, then a Galician will answer with a Galician proverb, and a Madrider will throw in a slang word that only other Madrilenians understand. The unofficial “midnight hour” starts at 11:30 pm, when the chat fills with jokes about the “Coria’s midnight snack” and the legendary “Coria coffee.” The room also has a quirky tradition: every Friday, the moderator posts a photo of a local dish, and everyone has to describe it in three words or less. That, and the fact that some users have been here since the nineties, gives the room a sense of continuity that feels like a living archive of Spanish internet culture.

No registration is required; just pick a nickname and jump in from any device. ChatZona has been running on real IRC since 2007, and the Coria chat is accessible via web or desktop client. The moment you type your first message, the room responds—usually within a couple of minutes—so you’ll quickly feel the pulse of a place that never stops talking.
