Fishing and steel define the place: the company that became Siderperú, the country’s first steelworks, was created here in 1956. The Lacramarca river splits the city into Chimbote and Nuevo Chimbote, home to the Universidad Nacional del Santa, created by law in December 1984. On exceptionally clear days, Huascarán can be seen from town. Peru stays on UTC−5 all year; nearby rooms include Trujillo and Lima.
