Carmena Chat

It’s 10 p.m. On a rainy Saturday, and Ana, a 28‑year‑old graphic designer from Valencia, types “¡Buenas!” into the chat, her screen flickering with the familiar blue IRC interface. She’s been dropping in every Friday night for months, chasing the same thread that started when a friend sent her a link to the room while she was on a train to Madrid. Ana came back because the conversation never ends, and the jokes feel like they’re written just for her—especially the meme about the “Carmena pizza” that everyone swears was invented in a local bakery.

In the room, debates flow from the political—“¿Quién ganaría si la UE decidiera imponer impuestos sobre el vino?”—to the absurd, like whether the legendary Spanish footballer Iker Casillas could beat a robot in a penalty shootout. One night, a newcomer asked for tips on starting a small business in Sevilla, and the senior members shared links to local permits and the best cafés for networking. The tone shifts from dry humor in the morning chats to heated arguments when a user drops a controversial meme, yet there’s always a quick “¡Tranquilo, que la gente se queda sin respuestas!” to calm the storm.

What sets this room apart is the blend of accents that crackle across the screen—Castilian, Andalusian, and the occasional Catalan “s” slipping into a sentence. The regulars have an inside joke about a user who once typed “Carmena” and accidentally entered “Carmencita,” sparking a meme that still circulates. Every Thursday night, the chat lights up at 7 p.m. Local time, and a ritual begins: the moderator posts a “Carmena‑challenge” for users to guess the next trending topic, and the first to answer gets a coveted “Carmena‑Gold” badge displayed next to their nickname.

There’s no sign‑up needed—just pick a nickname, choose your device, and jump into #Carmena on ChatZona. Since 2007, the IRC server has kept its old‑school feel, and the room’s energy is instant. You’ll notice that within the first two minutes, someone will reply with a friendly “¡Hola, tío!”—a sign that you’re already part of the flow.
