Campeche Chat

Campeche is both a city and a state, and #campeche covers both: the capital, San Francisco de Campeche, on the Gulf of Mexico, and the rest of the state's thirteen municipalities on the Yucatán peninsula, bordering Yucatán, Quintana Roo, Tabasco and Guatemala's Petén.

As one of Mexico's least populated states, city and state share a single room, which is still empty today. Until it fills up, joining from this page also opens the Mexico room, where there are people at any hour.

The capital is one of the few walled cities in the Americas: the wall, begun in 1686 and finished in 1704 after decades of pirate raids — the Dutch pirate Laurens de Graaf took the town in 1685 — formed an irregular 2,560-metre hexagon with eight bastions. The Land Gate and Sea Gate still stand, and the historic centre has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999. Nearby are the Maya sites of Edzná and, further south, Calakmul. The state was founded on 29 April 1863.
