Anna Chat

It’s 9 p.m. On a rainy Thursday when Luis, a 27‑year‑old from Valladolid, types “¡Hola, Anna!” into the chat client on his phone. He’s scrolling through his feed, tired from a night shift at the bakery, and sees a thread about the best paella recipes. A quick reply from Marta in Barcelona invites him to stay: “¿Has probado la paella de la abuela? Envíame foto.” Luis sends a pic of a steaming pan, and the room lights up with comments about regional variations.

Here the chatter jumps from the weather in Madrid to whether the new Spanish film “La Casa de Papel” deserves a sequel. One user argues that the plot is too predictable, while another defends the series’ clever twists. A few minutes later, someone asks for advice on finding a part-time job in Valencia, and the room turns into a quick résumé review. The tone is a mix of dry humor—like a joke about “un día sin café” that gets a chorus of laughs—and genuine support when a member shares a breakup.

What sets Anna apart is its blend of accents and inside jokes. The nickname “CaféCero” is a nod to the café that used to be a meeting spot in Zaragoza, and only regulars know the rule: the first message each hour must start with a weather fact from the user’s hometown. There’s an unwritten tradition of shouting “¡Feliz lunes!” at the crack of 12 p.m. On Mondays, even if the server clock says it’s still Sunday. The room also hosts a yearly meme contest where participants paste images of famous Spanish landmarks with captions that only the locals understand.

Just open your IRC client, pick a nickname, and type “/join #Anna” from any device. No registration is required, and the chat runs on the same servers that have carried real conversations since 2007. Once you’re in, you’ll notice that the first couple of minutes are rarely quiet—there’s always someone asking a question or sharing a funny story.
