Cercas proved he can change register without losing quality: from the historical metafiction of Soldiers of Salamis to the noir of Terra Alta without relaxing his literary standards. Melchor Marín is a character with a dark past who holds the series together well. Rural Catalonia as setting and the political tension in the background give the thriller real depth. A Premio Planeta that deserves the prize, which is not always the case.
