The Gratitudes
📖 Synopsis
An old woman losing her words and the two people who accompany her. De Vigan on debt, gratitude and old age.
De Vigan writes with economy and precision about subjects others would overload with sentiment. The loss of language in old age, the gratitude we fail to express in time, the care we owe those we love: all of it is here in two hundred pages without a single superfluous one. Slightly sentimental in the final stretch, but the overall restraint compensates. For readers who appreciate French literature that says much with little and is not afraid of unadorned emotion.
