Pérez-Reverte created with Falcó a Civil War antihero who has no moral ambiguity to resolve because he simply has no morality. That makes him more honest than many protagonists in the genre. The action is effective, the nineteen-thirties setting is well-researched and the pace gives no quarter. For fans of the author who want something darker than Alatriste, and for any reader who enjoys direct-action spy fiction.
