The plot is deliberately novelistic: the ruined returnee from the Americas, the strong-willed woman, the Jerez vineyards, the exotic backdrop of nineteenth-century Mexico and Cuba. There are no philosophical depths, nor any pretense of them; there is a gripping pace and a well-researched setting. For readers who want history with entertainment without sacrificing decent prose.
