The Cypress' Shadow Is Long
📖 Synopsis
An orphan raised in melancholic Ávila learns to fear affection because all that is loved is lost. Delibes' debut.
Delibes's first novel already bears the marks of the writer he would become: a clear gaze, deep melancholy, a style that never shows off. Pedro's story and his fear of love can feel a little contained, but there are passages of austere beauty that already hint at the great Delibes. More interesting as a document of a genius in formation than as a fully realized novel. Worth reading if you already know the author; otherwise, start with El camino.
