Vargas Llosa deployed an almost impossibly complex temporal architecture that works prodigiously: conversations overlapping across different moments in time, voices interrupting each other, unannounced jumps. The opening question — when did Peru go wrong? — has no easy answer, and that is part of the point. It demands an active, committed reader. One of the peaks of the Latin American boom and of twentieth-century narrative technique.
