Blatty wrote the most terrifying demonic possession in twentieth-century popular literature, partly because he grounded it in realism: the girl Regan, the baffled doctors, the mother struggling between reason and desperation. The Friedkin film is famous, but the book has more room for psychological horror and for the priests's religious doubts. For horror fans who want something with more depth than the genre usually provides.
