📖 Synopsis
A disillusioned doctor seeks meaning in the backward Spain of the century's end. Baroja and the pessimism of the Generation of '98.
✍️ ChatZona's review
Baroja is the most honestly pessimistic Spanish writer of the twentieth century. Andrés Hurtado, the doctor protagonist who finds meaning nowhere, is an uncomfortable character because he is right about too many things. The novel is spare, direct, without ornament, and that makes it more brutally effective. For readers who prefer their literature not to lie to them about how things are. One of the great novels of the Generation of 98 and not the most celebrated of them.
