Adichie constructed a coming-of-age novel that is also an essay on race and gender without either crushing the other. Ifemelu is an extraordinarily well-drawn protagonist: intelligent, imperfect, funny. The blog she writes within the novel about being Black in America could stand alone and would still be one of the most accurate texts on the subject. For those who want fiction that thinks without giving up a story that matters.
